This week starts off on a sour note after another disappointing away draw to Genoa (make sure you read the full match report), but we carry on as “GRUDGE MONTH” continues with a visit to Fiorentina on St. Patrick Saturday, which sets the appetite for next week’s double-helping of Milan of both the nerazzurro and rossonero varieties.

Sunday’s match also saw Elia’s 2012 debut, and we have another poll on this week’s Shoutbox, asking for your opinion on his 20-minute showing.

Based on your own expectations, how well did Elia perform on Sunday in Genoa?

  • I had high expectations & Elia was ok (30%, 61 Votes)
  • I had high expectations & Elia was poor (28%, 57 Votes)
  • I had low expectations & Elia was ok (23%, 47 Votes)
  • I had low expectations & Elia was poor (18%, 36 Votes)
  • I had high expectations & Elia was great (0%, 1 Votes)
  • I had low expectations & Elia was great (1%, 0 Votes)

I had high expectations for Elia, but I thought he was poor on the day.  However, I’m not disappointed in him.  First things first, the substitution came at the wrong time, when Pepe was beginning to actually come good in the match.  This can be attributed to the fact that Conte wasn’t on the pitch to cancel the sub, but that’s for another discussion.

Secondly, Elia has played 90 minutes this entire season.  THE ENTIRE SEASON.  For us to judge him on that 20 minutes is not only fickle, but just plain foolish, IMO.  Lastly, don’t let’s forget that his preferred position (which he has said many times in the past, and has been mentioned here), is on the left.  He prefers to receive the ball there and either cut inside or beat his man with pace down the line.  He’s unused to playing on the right, which as a winger, really can be a bit of a mindfuck.  Not making excuses for a poor performance overall, but I’m saying for Juventini to have a bit of patience and give the kid more than 90 minutes before we call him “bidone” and completely write him off.  At least give him HALF the chance we’ve given Vucinic.

    • http://JuventiKNOWS.com TeamGREASE

I thought Elia did ok… Just because a dude loses the ball twice in 20 minutes doesn’t mean he had an awful match. Look at Vucinic: I thought he was awesome yesterday but he lost the ball like 15 times.

I’d like to see Elia start on Saturday in the old 4-4-2, hanging out up-top with Matri, flanked by Pepe & Greaserini on the wings.

Fiorentina are a good team to experiment against.

      You know, because they suck.

      • Somnath_Sengupta

Raise your hand if you want Fiorentina to be relegated :D

that means jovetic coming into juve, unless marotta fu*ks it up

        Elia at striker?

    • abp

precisely!!… he’s played far too little and without continuity for him to get in any kind of rhythm and so for us to form any kind opinion on him, especially when he plays out of position.. couldn’t agree more with your points.. at least he tried (and on occasions did) to win back the ball soon after he lost it… I just hope conte doesn’t see this performance as a negative and refuses to let him see the pitch for the rest of the season… not saying of course that his actual self is for certain better than what we saw and that he will for sure turn things around if we give him enough chances, just saying that he hasn’t been given enough chances for any of us to say he won’t either..

      THIS!

  • amirnyc

So CONTE DID play ELIA and i think it’s been a long time coming – after approx. 3 months of weekly showing of solidarity on my part, and even though the guy fumbled a lot of balls i say it’s better than Giach or Vuc at the wing – if he starts against the purple pills expect fireworks, as he now understands – based on my endless understanding of the game and its psychological overtures and based on the look on his face after the game – that he was brought to be the nedved-like spark plug of the new juve era, and god willing, he will get his act together knowing the alternative will be him sent to some other club, to Lille for example, in a exchange-plus-cash deal for HAZARD.
this has gone long enough – 7 lean years are over as far as i’m concerned – and i wanna see some stars donning this blue blooded shirt. Bring in the Girouds, the Hazards, the Dedes, the goddamn Di Marias or whoever if need be, cause this won’t cut it ..

  • Dirtbunny

What I’ve seen from Elia so far this season has not been impressive, but I don’t think he’s been given enough playing time to get a complete picture.  This might have been a good game to start him in if the team hadn’t racked up so many draws.  At this point, being “unbeaten” is a cruel joke.

I know squat about tactics and I have been willing to trust that Conte knows what he’s doing, but even I’m having problems with some of these decisions.  I agree with the comment from either Aaron or Marco that Conte is waiting too long to bring in his subs.  We’ve seen too much Mirko and waaaaayy too much Borriello (who is in worse form than I’ve seen in him in a long time, and my expectations were low to begin with).   When Conte insists on Borriello in particular when it’s obvious to everyone that creativity is needed, I start to wonder if leaving ADP on the bench is personal or something.   He can’t possibly be more useless than Borriello and the fans are dying to see him.  I’m not surprised that Barza is hurt; he’s played too much.  I’m concerned that Pirlo is next.

Crap.  I have the urge to go back and put in bullet points, which probably means I’ve said enough, but one more thing:  The reason I’m not weeping my heart out this week is because I’ve been expecting the worst for a couple of weeks now.

tellin’ DB to calm down…..like she can’t smell doom coming ’round the bend…….  *mutters*

    • tortbort

i actually have a plan for borriello, that i think will really allow him to help this team… with all of our injuries to the back line, we can play him at CB… but instead of telling him that he’s a CB, just tell him he’s playing FW and going to opposite direction… every time a dangerous cross comes in he’ll get on the end of it and kick it out of bounds… simple!

i agree w/ dirtbunny, re the lack of playing time for ADP…aside from the class that he still has, his presence on the field will create such energy for the rest the team (especially when we’re playing at home)… come on conte, do the right thing!

      • Dirtbunny

I was watching Liverpool-Stoke the other day and thought the CB switcheroo might work with Andy Carroll, too.

  • pantsukki

I voted for the “high expectations & was poor” but I wasn’t too happy with the options in the poll. I didn’t expect immediate fireworks with his amount of appearances and the small amount of time left in the match, but I did expect him to have some positive impact. Unfortunately he did nothing to impress. Now I’m afraid that Conte’s conclusions from this will be “Ok, he got his chance and he didn’t take it, no use to play him anymore”. That would be so stupid. Elia deserves a real chance, and if he fails to impress, then sell him. But selling him now, without ever giving him a chance would be unfair and idiotic.

Tbh, I’m becoming more and more frustrated with Conte’s choices for the starting eleven and his late substitutions. Hopefully he’ll stop sticking with Vucinic and Pepe as if there are no other options for the flanks (and never uses Borriello again!). Mirko finally did something good with his passes and runs against Genoa, but his shooting/finishing is just horrible. And he has been far too bad in the previous matches.

  • mue

we bought him for 10m and played him less than 50 mins this season…
while conte said he wasn’t ready, language barrier, difference type of play has hindered him…due to our great start, giving him a playing minutes is risky… he needed to adapt, and that means playing minutes… he did ok last night.. loosing some ball while trying to dribble…it was good.. so he could adapt to serie A defender.. it was good, cos it was giving him a lesson about serie A.. so i vote “low expectation and was ok”..

  • Ss

what happened to the podcasts? or the sttbs or whatever, all it is now is previews and game overviews…

also, elia sucks and will not get any more game time from juventus or conte.

    • http://JuventiKNOWS.com TeamGREASE

podcasts are a bit on the back burner because of time restraints, scheduling conflicts, mid-week match fixtures, etc… we still want to do them, but right now we can’t keep both the site running and provide weekly podcast episodes.

the STTBS are still alive, though our output has admittedly decreased; we’re currently trying to work out a long-term schedule.

  • Somnath_Sengupta

I am surprised that so many people had high expectations from a player had spent last 4 months on the bench. Of course he was poor.

  • http://twitter.com/SJ_SETHI SJ_JUVE

I thought elia has been ok all the time he has played with best game was against bologna. I think elia was dropped in between  when he was starting to get 10 mins or so in a game he disappeared from bench following his ‘injury’ he will know not to mess with conte.

If the real elia is anything like the FM elia then i know why conte is waiting to send him on. I mean in FM idiot is so selfish from juventus penalty box he runs all the way into opponents penalty box, the keeper closed down to a narrow angle n he has damiao on right n quags on left but he takes the shot n hits straight at keeper. problem with him in FM is he NEVER pass when he has more than 1% of scoring. if real elia was like this then good thing conte is training him before releasing him.

I dont think this will be his last show krasic repeatedly gave much worse performance than this n still got some more chances n conte doesnt speak as highly abt him as he does abt elia.

      awesome.

  • Wondermaker

I thought Elia was ok, but it seemed like no-one wanted to pass the ball to him especially Pirlo. He was standing with his arms raised and the play would just go back to Vucinic.

    • http://www.juventiknows.com Marco P.

Indeed, I noticed that too. Perhaps because every single time he had the ball he ended up losing it in a dribbling attempt?

      • Wondermaker

He lost the ball a couple of times but that’s no reason to cut him out of the game. There might be more to it than we know. He may have a terrible attitude and that’s why he sees no playing time.

        • http://www.juventiknows.com Marco P.

Actually Conte’s frequently been praising Elia’s hard work during training this year. On this one, I might actually be willing to believe our manager. Too bad that hard work isn’t showing its fruits on matchday…

      • http://www.reflyhadiwijaya.net/ Refly

        Bad positioning.

  • Somnath_Sengupta

Lets be frank here, a lot of us hate Elia simply because of his off-field antics. His comments before joining Juventus is one of the biggest reasons. I have a feeling that a lot of Juve fans will not be praising him even if he plays well. We had a negative bias towards him even before he signed..

    • http://www.juventiknows.com Marco P.

I actually really don’t care about those antics personally. What I see on the field is material enough.

      • agiamba

Less than 90 minutes all season in Serie A. First game in 2012. That’s what I see.

        • http://www.juventiknows.com Marco P.

Perhaps you’re willing to throw out 120 minutes of Coppa Italia, but I certainly won’t. That, and six months of preparation that have produced… nothing.

          • http://twitter.com/O_Fenomeno86 A Dub

Unless my memory serves me wrong, didn’t Elia actually put in a fairly strong showing in Coppa Italia against Bologna?  Not a world-beating performance, but definitely enough for us to not write him off without a fair shake.

          • http://www.juventiknows.com Marco P.

Not really Aaron. He came on in the 65th, did absolutely nothing till the full-time whistle, and has to thank Raggi for Bologna’s equalizer which extended the game another 30. Only then did he start playing half-decent, with a few good dribbles and a pass to Marchisio for the winning goal.
            http://juventiknows.com/coppa-italia-juventus-2-1-bologna-extra-time-needs-an-extraordinary-man-sempre-principino/

For the optimist, the performance was reason enough to see more of Elia (though nothing to shout on rooftops about) and I’ll admit that’s what I thought too at the time. But frankly, if “more” produces the kind of performance vs. Genoa…

          • http://twitter.com/O_Fenomeno86 A Dub

That’s fair enough.  However, I still 100% believe it’s ridiculous to judge him fully on his *barely* two matches in Bianconero.  Let him at least get two or three full 90s under his belt before we call him a POS. Hell, let him get a full 90 with the team actually playing well!  If he doesn’t fit in, he doesn’t fit in.  All I ask (admittedly with a slight bias), is that we give him a fighting chance.  We can label him the next Amauri/Borriello/Vucinic at will once that’s happened.

          • http://www.juventiknows.com Marco P.

Aaron what some people continue to fail to understand is that Elia isn’t being judged on “just two matches”…. he’s being judged on two matches AND six months of preparation and training within the Juventus context of Serie A.

If Elia had arrived in September, put in two stinky performances vs. Parma and Siena, I would have agreed with you: too soon to judge. But this guy not only has been been paid €10m, he’s been training with the team for six months, more than sufficient time to get used to his new teammates, understand Conte’s tactics, learn how to backtrack etc. etc.!!! With that kind of price tag & preparation I really *do* expect a faster degree of adaptability and a better performance rate!!

You aren’t gonna get a gazillion chances at Juve, so you better make them count! Else the management is just gonna move on.

          • http://twitter.com/O_Fenomeno86 A Dub

Understood.  The thing I don’t get is that Conte doesn’t have to say the things he’s said about Elia’s training performance and mentality.  If he was training poorly and just didn’t fit in, wouldn’t he have been sold in January for us to cut our losses?  How do we explain the fact that Vucinic has put in several poor performances and still is almost untouchable?

As with Matri, I think it’s simply a case of Conte making bad judgements and not putting his best 11 on the pitch consistently.  I truly believe if Matri, ADP (who, I know, is a completely difference case as I’m sure Conte would like to move past his almost god-like status) and Elia were played more regularly, we wouldn’t have drawn as many matches as we have.

If it’s simply a case of Elia not fitting into the tactics, then by all means, let’s get rid of him!  That’s what I believe the case is with Krasic (plus an incredibly lamentable loss of confidence), and he’ll be off in the summer as well.

          • http://www.juventiknows.com Marco P.

Re: your 1st paragraph Aaron, that’s what actually makes it worse! If we believe Conte’s words that Elia’s has been training hard and playing well during practices, then why the hell can’t he reproduce it on frickin matchday!?! Just like when we compare the videos of him we’ve seen on YouTube, and then look at what he’s done for Juventus so far!

Perhaps it’s a matter of setting our expectations too high, the fact Serie A is different than Bundesliga, that Elia needs an uncharacteristically high period of adaptation… I don’t know. Either way, I expect more from a Juventus player!

As for Conte’s starting eleven, no one was questioning our manager’s decisions as long as the team was winning. If Elia couldn’t find space then, it was because those who played in his place were earning the team victories. Now is a different matter. Now we’ve got ‘draw-itis’, which is what started all this clamor to give Elia a chance. So I don’t think it’s fair to blame Conte on this one: evidently what he saw from Elia in training, despite the press releases (he trains hard, blah blah blah) just wasn’t enough to displace the other team starters. Elia should have made a place for himself by simply playing better.

As for Vucinic, that’s whole other kettle of fish which I won’t even try to explain.

          • http://twitter.com/O_Fenomeno86 A Dub

As a former professional (let’s not get carried away, I wasn’t fit to shine the Juventus players’ boots), I fully understand how difficult it can be to translate training form into matches.  ESPECIALLY if you’re only thrown on as a sub, and even more so when those appearances are as sporadic as Elia’s have been.

I can only imagine how difficult it can be to change countries, change styles of play, not speak the language, etc.

Saying all that to say, I completely agree with you that we should expect more of a Juventus player.  But we also shouldn’t be unrealistic and say that he should perform like Messi (because, let’s face it, we didn’t buy Messi) without a real opportunity to settle into the side ON THE PITCH.

Finally, with the starting 11… I questioned with the wins because I simply don’t like Vucinic, and I’ve been clamoring for Elia to be given a chance from the very very beginning.  I will absolutely admit if I’m proven wrong about the guy, but I’ll stick to my guns until he’s got more match time under his belt.

          • http://www.juventiknows.com Marco P.

Far from me the idea of expecting Elia to play like Messi, or to show us fireworks from the beginning.

I do however expect a reasonably fit, inferior, left-winged version of Camoranesi (minus the crunching tackles), and for him to not do anything silly like lose the ball at every single dribbling attempt. 6 months of training + no playing time gives you a pass on matchday anonymity, not matchday stupidity.

          • http://twitter.com/O_Fenomeno86 A Dub

Now there I will agree with you.  However, “one swallow does not a summer make”, and in Elia’s case, “a few bad dribbles, does not a bidone make”.  I’m starting to get sick of myself as I type this, but let’s give him real shot!

          • Vittorio

If we can all agree that Conte can only be subjective at best (being human), then my question is, what makes a good training session for him? Maybe Adam D. can best answer this, since he goes to those sessions. I think it’s hard to trust Conte anymore about what is good and bad.

We can’t charge 6 months of training as evidence against Elia – if we could, then can we say that ADP has not shown enough either? Both of them have very little chance to play, but nobody calls ADP’s desire or behavior into question? All reports thus far is that he has done well in training, is always classy and professional, and unfortunately his greatest accomplishments have been on the training pitches this year.

Meanwhile, Vucinic seems like the laziest person in the world, and he’s always starting. He just as wasteful, if not more, than the little Elia has shown in the 20 minutes against Genoa. So what is Conte’s decision-making based on? I think we’re all frustrated at the lack of logic and transparency in Conte’s recent tactics.

          • agiamba

I simply disagree that training is a proper substitute for match experience. It isn’t, as countless players (Giovinco, Motta) show. It’s absurd to expect a young player from a foreign league to play excellent everytime he plays.Elia’s pricetag has nothing to do with it- that’s between Marotta and HSV.

Either this transfer is extremely damning of Marotta and Paratici, or Conte is being retarded in never playing him.

          • http://www.juventiknows.com Marco P.

Training is certainly not a “substitute” Aaron, but it cannot be ignored as most Elia apologists are suggesting.

And Elia’s pricetag has EVERYTHING to do with it, particularly when it comes to fan expectation. If Elia had only cost us 1 million Euros I’d be a helluva lot more forgiving on his performances so far.

          • agiamba

Platini and Zizou took nearly a year before they really started to shine. And they were playing week in week out…

          • http://www.juventiknows.com Marco P.

Yeah and Ale Matri started producing for us immediately. There’s examples in both extremes.

          • agiamba

Ale Matri has spent his entire life speaking Italian, and breathing/living Calcio. It’s no coincidence that Conte had the players/foreigners from within Serie A start immediately at Juve (Lichtsteiner, Giaccherini, Vucinic) but the ones from different leagues (Vidal, Caceres, Elia, Estigarribia) have been brought in a lot slower.

          • http://www.juventiknows.com Marco P.

Really? I don’t recall Vidal taking 6 months to adapt to Italian soccer.

The point is, you can find examples at both ends of the spectrum, and in that whole list of foreigners you quoted (Vidal excepted) no one cost us €10m, and yet they have all been playing better despite their also limited appearances.

          • agiamba

Vidal also got consistent playing time. It took him 3 sub appearances totaling 76 minutes before he got his first start. Elia is 6 minutes shy of that for his entire year- maybe if he gets a 7 minute sub appearance, he’ll get a full 90 next.

My point was Caceres, Vidal, Estigarribia, the 3 sat on the bench and then made sub appearances before they got starts. The ones from within Calcio started immediately off the bat. Seems like Conte recognizes there’s an adaptation process just by that.

Seems pretty obvious to me- take a creative young player from a foreign league, and you’ve GOT to play him. If he’s played less than 90 minutes of league action in his first 6+ months at the club, there’s no way you can pass judgement on him. At this point, judgement falls on Marotta/Paratici or Conte.

          • http://www.juventiknows.com Marco P.

You forget that Vidal, unlike Elia, starting marveling us since the very first minute he stepped onto the field. He got his first “start” in the 45-minute match vs. AC Milan in the Trofeo TIM, scoring a wondergoal and assisting Matri for the winner. Then he got another start in the Trofeo Berlusconi and once again vs. Notts County. Then for his Serie A debut, despite coming on in the 67th against Parma, he managed to get himself on the scoresheet with another wondergoal.

What has Elia done to merit inclusion? He keeps coming on and letting us down. And yeah, that’s probably Marotta’s fault for buying a player that either wasn’t good enough or that Conte wasn’t gonna use.

          • http://iltifosi.tumblr.com/ Adam Digby

Aaron’s point on Conte using foreigners from outside Serie A more sparingly absolutely right. Also disagree that ‘Elia keeps on letting us down’. To claim he isn’t good enough is also not true, it’s not like he’s an unknown like Estigarribia, this guy has 26 Dutch caps & played in the World Cup Final aged 23 FFS. I put the blame for it almost entirely on Conte, Elia HAS shined in training as the coach says (I’ve seen it myself) & surely it falls on the Mister to take what works there into games? Both he & Del Piero are in the same position yet because of his legend status nobody questions Ale & rightly so. So is that Conte’s fault? Again yes imo. Blame his expiring contract all you like, if he had been having an impact (& that’s an impact the current team displays are crying out for) then Marotta would have no choice but to extend his deal.

I love Conte & admire the incredible work he’s done in transforming the fortunes of our club/team but the fact remains he has yet to find a way to incorporate his two most skillful/inventive players.

          • agiamba

            Doesn’t help we switched from a 4-4-2 to a 4-3-3/3-5-2.

  • agiamba

I think given Elia hasn’t even racked up 90 minutes of Serie A player with all his appearances combined over the whole season, it’s impossible to judge him.

  • mue

    no more STTBS?

  • https://profiles.google.com/WPazzurri/about Weston (@wpazzurri)

I dont think I can vote in the poll as my opinion of Elia is rather complicated:

I have high expectations for him as a player, however in this instance I expected an average performance as he must be terribly out of form, and that was a difficult game to get into. I was disappointed with his lack of a contribution, however I feel given the circumstances (played out of position, etc.) he deserves many more a chance in the lineup…

  • http://twitter.com/l_cetta Luca Cetta

I didn’t have high expectations – how could you considering he has played so little? But the player himself did not help. He has been out for so long, so there was no need to try these fancy tricks. Elia should have kept it simple to work his way back into the team. Positioning was poor throughout the 20 minute appearance.

  • Baaner

Changing the subject from Elia then what are your positions on the situation on LB? De Cegli has played more recently and do a fairly good job. Should he/can he claim that position in the next season also or is it area that Juve needs to focus on? (all that talk last summer on Bastos)

    • http://iltifosi.tumblr.com/ Adam Digby

Yeah Bastos, who plays right wing for Lyon & has never set foot in Serie A. What a ridiculously expensive way of exaggerating a problem. De Ceglie’s form right now is absolute proof of the errors Conte has made IMO. Played him in Wk 1, he looked good but saw red, then went with Chiellini as obviously didn’t trust Paolino. Eventually Conte relents, puts faith in him, sees huge reward. Imagine that. Perhaps a tactic the Mister should use elsewhere…….

(And wait till Aaron jumps on this one. PDC seems to be Tacchinardi’s heir right now….)

If De Ceglie keeps on playing at least as well as now, I’d like to see him retaining his starting spot. Besides, if Juventus makes it to the CL, they’ll need 4 club trained players in the 25-man squad, and De Ceglie would count as one. I believe that out of the current squad only Marchisio, Del Piero and Marrone would count as club trained (+DeCe), and we all know what will happen to Del Piero, and Marrone might be loaned out.

Michel Bastos is not a traditional LB, I think he’s natural position is much further up the field.

That argument clearly makes it crucial to keep De Cegli in the squad but perhaps he is then more used to provide coverage for another LB. Its true that Bastos perhaps is a bit to offensive even though he war measured a lot in the media as going to Juve. But it is not a solution with che on the LB and I therefore think it is a place that needs a worldclass player (Kolarov??) and then of course a worldclass striker (Higuain??)

I think he should be viewed as the first choice fullback, but we should also bring in another to compete with him.  I actually would like to see Ziegler return, but that’s also up to Conte.  We should absolutely keep him though.  I’d love to see Aly Cissokho or someone of that ilk show up. Bastos is definitely not the answer as he’s more of a left winger and can’t defend to save his life.

When Elia played, Lichsteiner was confused… And then suddenly Pirlo didn’t deliver long pass to the right flank. Things gone bad when Elia tried to skip one or two players and he failed TOTALLY.

What the F is this bullshit awarding Torino a win after they lost Monday night?!?! How is this not bigger news?!?!?!

Look, I want Torino in Serie A because they’re one of my favorite punching bags and seeing them get relegated every season is like watching the ending to my favorite movie over and over…

But it just seems like corruption is constantly EVERYWHERE in the FIGC.

Any thoughts on Marco Verratti whom Juve has reportedly signed? 19, deep-lying playmaker, very promising, and rather short are about all I’ve heard about him, but I’d love to hear more from anyone more familiar with his game.

I’m traveling to Turin with a friend on the weekend of the last game of the season, against Atalanta (13th May). Hopefully we’ll be able to get tickets to the match! If someone can recommend any (cheap) decent hotels in the city, I’d be grateful!
